Families Like Ours

Having something positive to look forward to is a game changer for our family. Donovan was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy type 1 at 5 weeks old. We immediately thought of all the things Donovan may not live long enough to enjoy and were overwhelmed by the daily tasks that a serious medical diagnosis can bring; It is easy to get bogged down by these things and forget to make the most of the time you have.

Since receiving an investigational treatment, Donovan continues to grow stronger than anyone expected. The whole family works hard to help him reach his full potential every day. We love our life, but in order to thrive we also need to take a break.

It means so much to us to have a date marked on the calendar with something fun to do. Something that will be accessible for our whole family, when we can set aside the daily stress and just have fun.

This summer we attended the Zoombezi Bay Adventure with A Kid Again. Sitting in the baby pool with Donovan, we looked around at three or four other wheelchairs parked at the pools edge and breathed a sigh of relief.

There are other families out there like ours, other kids like ours, who are having fun, living life and being kids.

It can be so difficult to have the time, energy and money to plan a fun activity for your family when you have a child with a medical diagnosis. We are sincerely grateful for the kind and generous people who work, volunteer and donate to A Kid Again.
